Outcomes of tibia shaft fractures caused by low energy gunshot wounds
Injury May 18, 2018
Su CA, et al. - Researchers performed a comparison of the rates of infections, nonunions, malunions, and secondary operations in tibia fractures resultant from low energy GSWs vs those seen in open and closed tibia fractures resultant from blunt trauma. They also examined the utility of using the traditional Gustilo-Anderson classification system for open fractures to describe fractures secondary to low energy GSW. Traditionally, GSWs are considered as open injuries. Low energy GSW tibia fractures demonstrated a low rate of infection and no nonunions. Reoperation rate with low energy GSW tibia fractures was similar to that observed with closed blunt tibia shaft fractures and was significantly lower than that observed with open tibia fractures.
