Outcomes of same day discharge after total hip arthroplasty in the Medicare population
Journal of Arthroplasty Oct 09, 2019
Feder OI, Lygrisse K, Hultzer L, et al. - Researchers sought to report on the outcomes of same-day discharge total hip arthroplasty (SDD THA) in the Medicare Population. In this retrospective review, 850 consecutive SDD THA patients, including 161 Medicare patients, were assessed. In the Medicare group, the patients were older and had less variability in their admission diagnosis. Medicare and non-Medicare groups did not show a significant difference in failure to launch, complication, emergency department visits, or 90-day readmission rates. Findings support the feasibility of safely expanding the benefits of SDD THA to the carefully indicated and motivated Medicare patient.
