Outcomes of salvage surgery for the oropharynx and larynx: A contemporary experience in a UK Cancer Center
European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Jan 24, 2019
Hay A, et al. - In this single-center, retrospective review of salvage surgery for recurrent head and neck cancer between 2008 and 2016, researchers assessed 61 cases to assess the outcomes of salvage surgery for the oropharynx and larynx. They observed 26 months of median overall survival of oropharyngeal recurrent tumors, and for laryngeal tumors, it was 23 months. They also noted a median survival in the negative margin group of 38 months vs the positive margin group with 9 months. They found poor survival outcomes in subjects following surgical salvage in the larynx and oropharynx. Patients with clear margins seemed to have a significantly better prognosis.
