Outcomes of relapsed human papillomavirus-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma treated with curative intent
Head & Neck Apr 20, 2019
Pipkorn P, et al. - In this single institution retrospective study, researchers examined 279 participants to quantify the treatment outcomes after curative intent therapy for locoregional and distant relapse following transoral surgery (TOS) for human papillomavirus-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. They noted that 13.6% of cases relapsed. They recorded 18 cases treated with curative intent whereas 21 had a local-regional relapse. With a median follow-up of 33 months, 3-year overall survival for loco-regional recurrence with curatively intended treatment was 75.3%. The subsequent development of the second relapse of disease was reported in 4 patients with isolated distant metastasis treated with curative intent. Association of salvage curative treatment of isolated local-regional relapse after TOS with favorable prognosis was observed and hence, suggested to be offered in suitable candidates.
