Outcomes of patients with disease recurrence after treatment for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer detected by routine follow-up CT scans vs a symptom driven evaluation
Lung Cancer Jul 16, 2019
Bodor JN, et al. - In this retrospective review, researchers analyzed patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer who had definitive management with chemoradiotherapy +/- surgical resection at a single institution to assess if relapse detection via scheduled follow-up computerized tomography (CT) vs symptoms impacted survival. They also investigated if these outcomes were influenced by the pattern of recurrence. Compared with symptom driven follow-up, routine monitoring by CT chest allowed detection of more localized disease, though no difference in overall survival was evident. To a large extent, the favorable results for patients with oligometastatic (1–3) brain metastases who present symptomatically drove this null result. An approach involving both chest and brain imaging could be considered.
