Outcomes of patients with disease recurrence after treatment for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer detected by routine follow-up CT scans vs a symptom driven evaluation
Lung Cancer Aug 29, 2019
Bodor JN, et al. - Researchers whether after treatment for locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer, survival outcome differ in correlation to relapse detected with scheduled follow-up CT vs symptoms, and whether these outcomes are affected by the pattern of recurrence. They reviewed data of 311 patients who had undergone definitive management of locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer with chemoradiotherapy +/- surgical resection in this single-institution retrospective review. Recurrence was noted in 167 patients. More localized disease was detected via routine surveillance by CT chest vs symptom-driven follow-up, though there was no difference in overall survival. The favorable outcomes for patients with oligometastatic (1–3) brain metastases who present symptomatically, seemed largely driving this null result. Findings emphasize considering a strategy of both chest and brain imaging.
