Outcomes of open abdomen vs primary closure following emergent laparotomy for suspected secondary peritonitis: A propensity-matched analysis
The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Aug 30, 2019
Kao AM, Cetrulo LN, Baimas-George MR, et al. - Researchers determined differences in outcomes of “open abdomen” (OA) vs primary abdominal closure (PC) following emergent laparotomy in patients with suspected secondary peritonitis. Using the Premier database at a quaternary care center (2012–2016), they identified 534 nontrauma patients with secondary peritonitis who underwent emergent laparotomy. Thirty-eight percent of patients were managed with open abdomen, with one-third of those requiring multiple reoperations. Relative to PC, OA was noted to be correlated with significantly increased complications, mortality rates, and costs.
