Outcomes of non-elective coronary artery bypass grafting performed on weekends

European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery May 26, 2020

Beller JP, Chancellor WZ, Mehaffey JH, et al. - In view of the prior reports inscribing a weekend effect with increased mortality in surgical patients and those with acute myocardial infarction (MI), researchers here examined their hypothesis of a similar phenomenon in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). From a multicentre regional Society of Thoracic Surgeons database, they assessed data from 14,374 patients who underwent urgent or emergency isolated CABG. Among these patients, 410 (2.9%) were operated on over the weekend. Risk-adjusted analyses revealed no increased odds for mortality in patients operated on over the weekend; however, an increased odds of major morbidity was noted. Furthermore, increase in morbidity was noted as the operative day approached from Monday to the weekend.
