Outcomes of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis following liver transplantation. An updated meta-analysis and systematic review

Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology Nov 22, 2021

Yong JN, Lim WH, Ng CH, et al. - Patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) receiving liver transplantation (LT) are at higher risk of adverse clinical outcomes because of the systemic pathogenesis of NASH. Hence, a time-dependent survival analysis has been conducted between LT recipients with and without NASH in hazard ratio.

  • Searching Medline and Embase databases, researchers identified 15 studies involving 119,327 LT recipients for inclusion in the analysis.

  • NASH was prevalent at 20.2% (95% CI: 12.9 - 30.2).

  • Comparable complication rates, overall survival and graft survival were recorded among patients receiving LT for NASH cirrhosis vs non-NASH patients.

  • However, close monitoring may be required in those with higher MELD scores given a correlation of higher MELD score with significantly worse OS in NASH vs non-NASH post-LT.
