Outcomes of minimally invasive vs open surgery for intermediate to high- grade spondylolisthesis: A 10-year retrospective, multicenter experience
Spine Sep 28, 2020
Lak AM, Abunimer AM, Rahimi A, et al. - Via performing a retrospective cohort study, researchers sought to determine the surgical outcomes and complications of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) vs open surgery in the management of intermediate to high grade spondylolisthesis. In addition, they investigated the relative outcomes following MIS in-situ fusion vs MIS reduction and open in-situ fusion vs open reduction subgroups. They included, in total, 57 patients in this study. Of these patients, 40 were managed with open surgery and 17 with MIS; specifically, MIS in-situ fusion was performed in seven patients, open in-situ fusion in 11 patients, MIS reduction in additional 10 patients, and open reduction in 29 patients. Outcomes revealed higher rate of complications in correlation with performing MIS reduction in the management of grade II or higher lumbar or lumbosacral spondylolisthesis. They suggest undertaking traditional open surgery for the management of this complex pathology.
