Outcomes of liver transplantation for acute fatty liver disease of pregnancy
American Journal of Transplantation Apr 28, 2019
Kushner T, et al. - The national Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) data were retrospectively reviewed for women in the United States who underwent liver transplantation (LT) for acute liver failure (ALF) from acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) from 1991 to 2015. Outcomes of these women were compared to outcomes in women of childbearing age undergoing transplant for ALF from acetaminophen and ALF from other etiologies. Life support at time of LT and high rates of renal dysfunction, and hyperbilirubinemia were likely in women with AFLP. Researchers identified that AFLP is a rare indication for LT. However, compared to other women of childbearing age undergoing LT for ALF, AFLP patients were similarly sick or sicker. Higher rates of rejection in the AFLP group may be the cause of worsened graft survival.
