Outcomes of liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma in octogenarians
HPB Feb 06, 2020
Sanyal S, et al. - Since there is a lack of data about operative outcomes in patients ≥ 80 years for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) from Western institutions, researchers conducted this retrospective review to compare the result of HCC resections in patients < 80 years vs patients ≥ 80 years from the institution in the UK. The sample consisted of all patients (n = 200; 19 patients were ≥ 80 years and 181 were < 80 years) undergoing liver resections for HCC between 2005 and 2015. Morbidity and mortality were not significantly different between the < 80 years and the ≥ 80 years group. Resection of the liver should not be precluded on the basis of age alone; with good results in patients ≥ 80 years that warrant surgery.
