Outcomes of lipid control in secondary prevention of coronary artery disease in Finland: A 24-month follow-up after acute coronary syndrome

Atherosclerosis Jan 29, 2020

Leskelä RL, Torvinen A, Rissanen TT, et al. - By performing this retrospective study, researchers assessed LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) levels as consequences of secondary prevention of coronary artery disease (CAD) in Finland up to 24 months after the receipt of a diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This inquiry was carried out in two regions of Finland that have a combined population of 400,000. The treatment goal (LDL-C < 1.8 mmol/l) was achieved by 32% of ACS patients at the end of the 24-month follow-up, however, 21% of patients fluctuated between being on and above target. Findings revealed that the LDL-C treatment target recommended by the guidelines was not achieved by two thirds of CAD patients with ACS and on statin treatment. As fluctuation in LDL-C levels was evident during the follow-up, a low level during the first 12 months following the acute event does not promise the maintenance of the outcomes in the long term. Therefore, monitoring LDL-C levels was recommended at least on yearly basis on follow-ups and treatment should be adopted accordingly.
