Outcomes of laparoscopic vs open pancreatoduodenectomy: A nationwide retrospective cohort study
Surgery Jan 28, 2021
Katsuki R, Jo T, Yasunaga H, et al. - In order to determine the feasibility of laparoscopic pancreatoduodenectomy relative to open pancreatoduodenectomy, researchers compared the postoperative outcomes following the two strategies using a nationwide inpatient database. A total of 2,100 eligible patients were identified. Using propensity score matching, they matched 95 patients in the laparoscopic pancreatoduodenectomy group with 380 patients in the open pancreatoduodenectomy group. Outcomes overall suggest almost no benefit of laparoscopic pancreatoduodenectomy over open pancreatoduodenectomy. They suggest the value of laparoscopic pancreatoduodenectomy as an alternative option for open pancreatoduodenectomy only in high-volume hospitals.
