Outcomes of intraoperative radiotherapy for early-stage breast cancer: Experience from a multidisciplinary breast oncology program
American Journal of Surgery Jun 23, 2019
Rana S, et al. - Researchers retrospective reviewed 127 breast cancer patients (median age: 67 years) who underwent intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) from 2009-2016 for demographics, pathology, toxicity, and recurrences. Ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence was noted in 5 patients (4%) with the median time to recurrence of 36.8 months. Outcomes support the safety and efficacy of IORT as an alternative to whole breast radiotherapy in select early-stage breast cancer patients. In locally recurrent breast cancer, IORT serves as a suitable alternative to completion mastectomy.
