Outcomes of in-hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation for patients with end-stage liver disease
Liver International Mar 03, 2019
Ufere NN, et al. - Using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database (2006-2014), researchers investigated the survival of hospital discharge in patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD) after receiving in-hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). In total, 177,533 patients experienced in-hospital CPR; of these patients, 1,474 had ESLD. Compared with patients without ESLD, those with ESLD had lower rates of survival to hospital discharge. Investigators found that ESLD patients had a significantly lower chance of discharge to home vs patients without ESLD in-hospital CPR survivors. Compared with patients with metastatic cancer, those with ESLD also had lower rates of survival to hospital discharge. Overall, they concluded that results in patients with ESLD after in-hospital CPR are poor and worse than in patients with metastatic cancer. The current analysis can be used to inform patients with ESLD about the objectives of care discussions.
