Wittmann O, et al. - Researchers assessed the outcomes in previously healthy febrile children presenting to the Emergency Department with severe neutropenia. Compared to patients with fever and moderate neutropenia, immunocompetent patients with fever and severe neutropenia did not carry a higher risk for severe bacterial infection. With serial blood counts, such patients could potentially be followed closely to ensure bone marrow recovery, without the use of antibiotics.
