Outcomes of immediate oncoplastic surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy in breast cancer patients
BMC Cancer Sep 19, 2019
Borm KJ, Schönknecht C, Nestler A, et al. - As breast tissue rearranges following undergoing oncoplastic surgery techniques impeding target definition during adjuvant radiotherapy (RT), researchers sought to assess local control rates after immediate oncoplastic surgery and adjuvant RT. Among 965 patients who underwent breast-conserving therapy and adjuvant RT between January 2000 and December 2005, immediate oncoplastic surgery (ONC) was performed on 288 patients and breast-conserving surgery only (NONC) was done in 677 patients. ONC and NONC had no significant difference in terms of local control rates, progression-free survival and overall survival indicating no effect of immediate oncoplastic surgery on the effectiveness of adjuvant whole breast RT in breast cancer patients. On univariate analyses, risk factors for local recurrence were G2–3, a younger age, T-stage lymph node involvement as well as triple-negative tumors.
