Outcomes of head and neck surgery in patients with a history of solid organ transplantation
The Laryngoscope Jul 10, 2019
Al-Qurayshi Z, et al. - Among 322 transplant patients and 120,401 controls, researchers studied the prevalence and outcomes of head and neck surgeries. Utilizing the Nationwide Readmissions Database, 2010 to 2014, a retrospective cross-sectional analysis was conducted which included adults patients who had head and neck surgeries. For this investigation, patients with a reported history of transplantation of solid organ have been compared to patients with no such history. Main surgeries included 37.8% parathyroid, 17.7% thyroid, 11.2% major salivary gland, 10.6% major mouth/tonsil, and 9.6% major nose/paranasal sinuses. In otolaryngology practices, transplant patients are increasingly being found. The kidney is the most commonly transplanted organ, and parathyroidectomy is the most commonly performed procedure. There has been no reported in-hospital mortality among cases.
