Outcomes of general anesthesia vs conscious sedation for stroke undergoing endovascular treatment: A meta-analysis
BMC Anesthesiology May 17, 2019
Wan TF, et al. - Researchers assessed the impact of general anesthesia (GA) vs conscious sedation (CS) on clinical and angiographic outcomes in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients undergoing endovascular treatment. For this purpose, they analyzed 23 studies comprising 6,703 patients. The included studies were identified from PubMed, Embase, and Web of Knowledge databases searched through February 2019. They found that worse functional outcome and increased rate of mortality were reported in relation to the use of GA vs CS for endovascular treatment in AIS patients, however, GA vs CS randomized controlled trials revealed no differences in worsened outcomes. Moreover, these results are mainly based on retrospective investigations that did not randomize patients by anesthesia type.
