Outcomes of endoscopic transcanal type 1 cartilage tympanoplasty
European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Sep 19, 2019
Özdemir D, et al. - Among 104 patients who had endoscopic transcanal type 1 cartilage tympanoplasty due to the tympanic membrane perforation and chronic otitis media, researchers conducted this retrospective study to assess air–bone GAP, graft success and hearing gain according to the size and location of perforation. In all patients, tragal cartilage grafts were utilized. Data reported that the mean surgery duration was 45.60 ± 17.39 min and the overall graft success rate was 93.2%. In anterior quadrant with moderate sized, perforations were most commonly located. Investigators found that endoscopic transcanal type 1 cartilage tympanoplasty achieved a high rate of graft success and improved hearing outcomes irrespective of the location and size of the perforations. Endoscopic tympanoplasty gives high patient safety and comfort through wide visualization, easy applicability, short duration of operation, low risk of complication, and less invasive approach in middle-ear surgery.
