Outcomes of emergency abdominal surgery in octogenarians: A single-center analysis
The American Journal of Surgery Dec 04, 2018
Lavanchy JL, et al. - Researchers retrospectively analyzed octogenarians undergoing emergency abdominal surgery (EAS) 12/2011-12/2016 for their the outcomes. These octogenarians displayed a mortality of 16.4%. Age, ASA score≥4, mesenteric ischemia and ICU admission were identified as the mortality predictors. One-third of early mortality (≤7 days) was due to postoperative withdrawal of care. Hence they recommend practicing caution while selecting octogenarians for emergency abdominal surgery to avoid ethically questionable interventions.
