Outcomes of elderly patients with nondisplaced or minimally displaced femoral neck fractures treated with internal fixation: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Injury Oct 04, 2019
Overmann AL, et al. - Via performing a systematic review of the orthopedic literature, researchers investigated the outcomes of internal fixation for the treatment of non-displaced and minimally displaced femoral neck fractures in elderly patients. This systematic review and meta-analysis included 27 studies and 21,155 patients. Outcomes suggest that an internal fixation treatment of a nondisplaced hip fracture in elderly patients is associated with 15% risk of 1-year mortality and a 14% risk of reoperation within 1-year. In this review, only three studies compared internal fixation to arthroplasty. Hence only a little evidence was gained for arthroplasty as an alternative treatment for internal fixation in this population.
