Outcomes of dental and craniofacial osseointegrated implantation in head and neck cancer patients
Head & Neck Jun 27, 2019
Moore P, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective audit to evaluate the treatment of patients receiving dental or craniofacial osseointegrated implants during head and neck cancer treatment. For this investigation, 160 implants were inserted in 54 subjects with oral, nasal, orbital, or auricular defects. Overall, after a mean follow-up of 25.7 months, 85% of implants were successful. In both nonsmokers and patients who did not undergo radiotherapy, there was a statistically insignificant implant survival benefit. In patients with head and neck cancer, dental and craniofacial osseointegrated implants can be used reliably. However, to clarify the role of smoking in osseointegrated implant failure, further study is needed.
