Outcomes of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in the head and neck region with regional lymph node metastasis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery May 09, 2019
Sahovaler A, et al. - Researchers performed this systematic review and meta-analysis of 3534 patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in the head and neck region with regional lymph node metastasis (McSCCHN) in 20 observational studies and 1 randomized clinical trial for the risk factors most significantly associated with overall survival, locoregional recurrence, locoregional control, and disease-specific survival. Risk factors most significantly associated with overall survival were immunosuppression, extracapsular spread, and adjuvant radiotherapy. They noted poor prognosis for immunosuppressed patients and those with extracapsular extension. Improvement in overall survival was observed in correlation to receipt of adjuvant radiotherapy. These risk factors may assist in refining the staging systems and may help better counseling patients with McSCCHN about their prognosis.
