Outcomes of coronary artery bypass grafting in patients with heart failure with a midrange ejection fraction
The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Feb 24, 2021
Deo SV, Sundaram V, Sahadevan J, et al. - Patients with heart failure and severely reduced left ventricular systolic function (LVEF) exhibit improvement in survival after undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Researchers here aimed at describing adverse cardiovascular event rates after CABG in patients with heart failure with midrange ejection fraction (HFmrEF; LVEF > 40% and < 55%). From the Veterans Affairs national database (2010-2019), they identified data of 6,533 veterans who received isolated CABG. Among these, HFmrEF and heart failure with reduced LVEF (HFrEF) was reported in 1,715 (26.3%) and 566 (8.6%) respectively; the control group (normal LVEF and no heart failure) comprised 4,252 (65.1%) patients. Findings revealed the negative impact of heart failure with midrange ejection fraction on survival after CABG. In addition, higher rates of myocardial infarction and heart failure hospitalization were recorded in these patients.
