Outcomes of combined use of topical and intravenous tranexamic acid on surgical field quality during functional endoscopic sinus surgery: A randomized controlled trial
Head & Neck Feb 04, 2021
El‐Din El‐Ozairy HS, Mady OM, Tawfik GM, et al. - Researchers performed this randomized controlled double‐blinded prospective trial to assess the effectiveness of local, intravenous and combined use of tranexamic acid (TA) in improving the surgical field quality during functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). Participants in the study were 120 patients scheduled for elective FESS. Patients were randomly and evenly assigned to one of four groups after induction of general anesthesia; IV TA, local TA, both IV and local TA, and placebo. In all groups, there were no statistically significant variations in hemoglobin, hematocrit, prothrombin time, and partial thromboplastin time over time. Topical and intravenous TA combined to provide the best surgical field for FESS, less fentanyl consumption, and less recovery time without causing significant side effects.
