Outcomes of cholecystectomy in US veterans with cirrhosis: Predicting outcomes using nomogram
American Journal of Surgery Dec 25, 2020
Shahait A, Wilson J, Mesquita-Neto B, et al. - In this study, the outcomes of open and laparoscopic cholecystectomy (OC/LC) were examined in veterans with cirrhosis and a nomogram to predict outcomes was developed. Analyzing the Veterans Affairs Surgical Quality Improvement Program, researchers identified 349 patients. Overall, 18.7% of patients had occurrence of complications, and 3.8% died. Overall, the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score was noted to be an independent factor correlated with morbidity and mortality, while a protective effect of laparoscopic approach was noted on morbidity. Despite that cholecystectomy is a high-risk operation in cirrhotic veterans, favorable outcomes may be achieved with LC vs OC in selected patients. In addition, they proposed an easy-to-use nomogram to predict morbidity and mortality for cirrhotic patients undergoing cholecystectomy.
