Outcomes of carotid revascularization in patients with contralateral carotid artery occlusion
Journal of the American College of Surgeons Feb 19, 2021
Dakour-Aridi H, et al. - Among patients suffering from contralateral carotid artery occlusion (CCO), the following revascularization procedures were compared: TCAR (TransCarotid artery revascularization), carotid endarterectomy (CEA), and transfemoral carotid artery stenting (TFCAS). In-hospital outcomes were assessed by applying multivariable logistic analysis. Researchers analyzed 1,144 TCARs, 1,182 TFCAS and 2,527 CEA procedures done for CCO. Lower odds of in-hospital stroke or death were reported in relation to TCAR vs TFCAS independent of symptomatic status. In asymptomatic patients with lower odds of in-hospital stroke, TCAR vs CEA appeared to be a better choice. Yet, no significant difference was evident in symptomatic patients.
