Outcomes of bariatric surgery in geriatric patients ≥ 65 years: Single institution study
Obesity Surgery Feb 08, 2019
Bhandari M, et al. - Researchers retrospectively reviewed the prospectively collected data on geriatric patients (age 65 to 80 years) who had undergone bariatric surgery at a single institution from January 2010 to December 2013, to determine the bariatric surgery outcomes in geriatric patients ≥ 65 years. For comparative evaluation, they matched a cohort of adult patients (age 17 to 64 years) who also underwent bariatric surgery in the same period. Among 2508 patients who had bariatric surgery, 184 (7.3%) patients were ≥ 65 years. The bariatric surgery outcomes in geriatric patients were similar to that in adults. In line with previous works, this study confirms the safety and efficacy of bariatric surgery treatment in a selected geriatric population.
