Outcomes in patients with pT3N0M0 breast cancer with and without postmastectomy radiotherapy
Cancer Management and Research May 16, 2021
Li C, Wang J, Mo M, et al. - Researchers sought to compare pT3N0M0 breast cancer patients with and without postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT), in terms of locoregional recurrence-free survival (LRFS), disease-free survival (DFS), and breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS). They used the database of the Breast Cancer Center of Shanghai and identified 114 patients with node-negative non-metastatic breast cancer larger than 5 cm. Adjuvant PMRT was received by 59 (51.8%) of the patients. In the PMRT and non-PMRT groups, the 5-year LRFS was 100% vs 98.1%, respectively; 5-year DFS was noted to be 97.1% for the whole cohort, 98.0% for the PMRT group vs 96.2% for the non-PMRT group. BCSS did not differ between the two groups. Findings showed a low locoregional recurrence (LRR) rate as well as good survival for node-negative breast cancer > 5 cm. A high risk for LRR was found in patients with family history of malignant tumors, triple-negative breast cancer subtype, lymphovascular invasion positivity, or grade 3 disease, and these cases might benefit from PMRT.
