Outcomes in immunosuppressed anal cancer patients
American Journal of Surgery Aug 26, 2019
Bingmer K, et al. - Given an increased risk of developing anal cancer in immunosuppressed patients, researchers investigated outcomes of this population. They retrospectively reviewed data of 136 anal cancer patients from a single academic institution; of these, 19 (14%) were immunosuppressed. Findings revealed a poor tolerance of chemotherapy and response to chemoradiation, and an increased rate of recurrence among immunosuppressed patients. This finding is possibly due to the fact that immunosuppression is associated with hypoalbuminemia, which in turn is associated with worse overall and progression-free survival.
