Outcomes for older adults with acute myeloid leukemia after an intensive care unit admission
Cancer Aug 01, 2019
Slavin SD, Fenech A, Jankowski AL, et al. - Since older adults with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are often assumed to have poor outcomes after admission to the intensive care unit (ICU), researchers desired to know about ICU utilization and post-ICU outcomes in this population. Study participants included 330 patients who were 60 years old or older and were diagnosed with AML between 2005 and 2013 at two hospitals in Boston. According to this retrospective analysis, 96 patients have been admitted to the ICU, mainly due to respiratory failure, septic shock, and neurological compromise. Although nearly one-third of older AML patients are admitted to ICU, with good functional outcomes, nearly half survive hospital discharge. The performance status of the baseline and the need for two or more life-sustaining therapies predict hospital death. These data support the proper use of ICU resources for older AML patients.
