Outcomes following transoral laser microsurgery with resection of cartilage for laryngeal cancer
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Jun 02, 2019
Chang BA, et al. - Patients undergoing resection of the thyroid cartilage during transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) for laryngeal cancer over a 10-year period were retrospectively reviewed and inclusion of patients with 5-year follow-up was done in this work. Endoscopic resection of the thyroid cartilage was attempted in 14 patients. Endoscopic clearance was successful in 12 patients. Conversion to total laryngectomy was done in 2 patients either at the time of surgery or shortly after due to extent of disease that was deemed not amenable to endoscopic resection. Outcomes support the feasibility of TLM for laryngeal cancer performed with removal of thyroid cartilage. In a select group of patients, reasonable oncologic and functional outcomes could be achieved.
