Outcomes associated with postoperative glycemic control after carotid procedures
Journal of Vascular Surgery Aug 25, 2018
Bath J, et al. - The connection between postoperative hyperglycemia (POH) and outcomes was evaluated among 4,022 patients admitted for elective carotid procedures (18% underwent carotid artery stenting [CAS] and 82% underwent carotid endarterectomy [CEA]), selected from the Cerner Health Facts (2008-2015) database using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification diagnosis and procedure codes. Outcomes suggest an increased risk for adverse events after CAS and CEA in association with POH. This was noted independent of a diabetes diagnosis. Researchers observed that infection, stroke, renal failure, respiratory complications, and increased hospital utilization were linked to hyperglycemia. As hyperglycemia was significantly associated with inferior outcomes after carotid procedures, they recommend achieving optimal glucose control after carotid procedures.
