Outcomes associated with hyperglycemia after abdominal aortic aneurysm repair
Journal of Vascular Surgery Aug 30, 2018
Tarbunou YA, et al. - The association between postoperative hyperglycemia and outcomes after abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair was evaluated. In this retrospective study, approximately one in six patients undergoing elective AAA repair had postoperative hyperglycemia. In patients with and without diabetes, postoperative hyperglycemia was associated with adverse events, including in-hospital mortality and infections after AAA repair. Greater risk of infection and death was evident for patients undergoing endovascular repair who had postoperative hyperglycemia compared to those who had open surgery. A diabetes diagnosis was associated with lower odds of both infection and in-hospital mortality after controlling for insulin administration and postoperative hyperglycemia. As hyperglycemia was found to be significantly associated with inferior outcomes after elective AAA repair, it could be used as a clinical marker.
