Outcomes and prognostic factors in intermediate-risk prostate cancer: Multi-institutional analysis of the Spanish RECAP database
Clinical and Translational Oncology Dec 13, 2018
Hervás A, et al. - Researchers analyzed data of intermediate-risk (IR) prostate cancer (PCa) patients, who underwent primary external beam radiotherapy (EBRT), from the multi-institutional Spanish RECAP database, a population-based prostate cancer registry in Spain, to retrospectively assess their outcomes and to identify the prognostic factors. They included a total of 1754 patients from the RECAP database and stratified them by risk group: favourable IR (GS 6, ≤ T2b or GS 3 + 4, ≤ T1c), n = 781 (44.5%); marginal IR (GS 3 + 4, T2a–b), n = 252 (14.4%); and unfavourable IR (GS 4 + 3 or T2c), n = 721 (41.1%). This first nationwide study, performed in Spain, reported long-term outcomes of patients with intermediate-risk PCa treated with EBRT. Findings revealed good survival outcomes, with a low incidence of both acute and late toxicity. They noted significantly lower 5- and 10-year disease-free survival rates for patients with unfavourable risk characteristics. Treatment outcomes were significantly predicted with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and radiotherapy dose ≥ 74 Gy.
