Outcomes after ST-segment vs non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction revascularized by coronary artery bypass grafting
The American Journal of Cardiology Sep 19, 2020
Malmberg M, Sipilä J, Rautava P, et al. - Researchers examined how ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients differ from non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) patients in terms of outcomes following coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG). In this multicenter, retrospective cohort follow-up study, they assessed consecutive patients with STEMI (surgery ≤ 48 hours of admission; n = 348) or NSTEMI (n = 1,160) revascularized with first-time isolated CABG in Finland using nationwide registries (median age 68 years, 24% women). STEMI patients exhibited higher rate of in-hospital mortality (11.4% vs 5.3%) and re-sternotomy rates (6.9% vs 3.5%). Among all operated patients or hospital survivors, STEMI and NSTEMI patients did not exhibit difference in long-term all-cause mortality. Based on these findings, they recommend considering both short- and long-term risks when evaluating patient´s for CABG eligibility by MI type.
