Outcomes after inguinal hernia repair with mesh performed by medical doctors and surgeons in Ghana
JAMA Sep 27, 2019
Beard JH, Ohene-Yeboah M, Tabiri S, et al. - Through a cohort study of 242 men with primary reducible inguinal hernia carried out from February 15, 2017, to September 17, 2018, experts contrasted outcomes following inguinal hernia repair with mesh done by medical doctors and surgeons in Ghana. Preoperative patient features were comparable in both groups. At follow-up at 2 weeks and at 1 year, respectively, 237 and 223 patients were observed. The absolute variation in the recurrence rate between the medical doctor group and the surgeon group exhibited the noninferiority of the medical doctors. No statistically important variations in postoperative complications, patient satisfaction, severe chronic pain, or self-evaluated health for medical doctors and surgeons were observed. Therefore, this study explains that medical doctors can be prepared to conduct an elective inguinal hernia repair with mesh in men with superior outcomes and high patient satisfaction in a low-resource setting. Moreover, to contend the global burden of hernia disease, this finding suggests surgical task-sharing.
