Outcome of re-revision surgery for adverse local tissue reaction in metal-on-polyethylene and metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty

Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 18, 2020

Bonner B, et al. - In this study, early complication rates and outcomes, as well as potential risk factors for a re-revision, were reported. Researchers recruited a sum of 252 consecutive total hip arthroplasty (THA) individuals who underwent a revision for adverse local tissue reactions (ALTR). The study found a 21% overall complication rate following the initial revision for ALTR. 16% of these revision individuals needed a re-revision. They observed the high rate of early complications (35%) and third revisions (23%) following re-revision of symptomatic ALTR individuals with those needing re-revision associated with extensive intra-operative tissue necrosis. These data give clinically beneficial information that may help surgeons in clinical decision making and preoperative counseling of both MoM and MoP individuals undergoing re-revision surgery for ALTR.
