Outcome of non-surgical treatment of proximal femur fractures in the fragile elderly population
Injury May 31, 2019
Rutenberg TF, et al. - Researchers performed a retrospective cohort study of individuals aged ≥65 years to compare fragile patients treated non-surgically for proximal femur fractures to those treated surgically, regarding outcomes. They identified 847 patients who presented with fragility fractures to a primary trauma center. Among these, 94 (11%) received non-surgical treatment and 753 (89%) underwent surgery. Outcomes revealed reduced long-term mortality rates in correlation to operative treatment for fragility hip fracture even in the more fragile patients, compared to non-surgical treatment.
