Outcome of locally advanced esophageal cancer patients treated with perioperative chemotherapy and chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery
American Journal of Clinical Oncology Dec 23, 2020
Ahmed N, Owen J, Abdalmassih M, et al. - Via performing this institutional review, researchers sought to report on the outcome of patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer (LAEC) treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiation (C-RT) or perioperative chemotherapy (P-CT) followed by surgery. From the Manitoba Cancer Registry, they identified 67 patients treated with C-RT and 32 with P-CT. Outcomes suggest a higher degree of pathologically tumor regression in correlation with C-RT. A better outcome was reported for patients with major tumor regression vs those with minimal to poor response. Although C-RT was associated with a trend toward improved time to recurrence, there was no difference in overall survival or recurrence-free survival.
