Outcome of hepatocellular carcinoma detected during surveillance: Comparing USA and Japan
Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology Oct 27, 2020
Toyoda H, Hiraoka A, Olivares J, et al. - In this study, characteristics and prognosis were compared between individuals with surveillance-detected hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) from the United States (US) and Japan. Between January 2006 and December 2015, individuals in whom initial HCC was detected under surveillance from two centers in the US and two from Japan were included. A total of 3,788 HCC patients were included in the study. The study found poor prognosis of patients with surveillance-detected HCC in the US than in Japan, primarily driven by variations in treatment delivery. Research is required to evaluate the reasons for these variations.
