Levinsky NC, Wima K, Morris MC, et al. - In this work, outcomes for delayed and salvage esophagectomy for esophageal adenocarcinoma were reported using the National Cancer Database. Querying the database from 2004 to 2014, researchers identified a total of 8,489 eligible patients for inclusion. For timely esophagectomy and for delayed esophagectomy, a median postradiation interval of 49 (40-61) days and 109 (97-132) days was reported, respectively. More frequently individuals from the black race (2.3% vs 1.2%) and those having Medicare (47.9% vs 39.8%) comprised the delayed group. Findings revealed long-term survival similar to timely esophagectomy in correlation with delayed and salvage esophagectomy despite increased perioperative mortality. These findings suggest that patients who do not receive timely esophagectomy after chemoradiation could be offered delayed and salvage esophagectomy.
