Outcome and risk factors associated with two-stage reimplantation requiring an interim spacer exchange for periprosthetic joint infection
Journal of Arthroplasty Sep 17, 2020
Klemt C, Smith EJ, Tirumala V, et al. - This research was sought to evaluate outcomes for patients with repeat spacer exchange and to distinguish risk factors correlated with interim spacer exchange in two-stage revision arthroplasty. Researchers evaluated a sum of 256 consecutive two-stage revisions for chronic infection of total hip arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty with reimplantation and minimum 2-year follow-up. The results of this study indicate that individuals with spacer exchange had a significantly higher risk of re-infection at 2-years of follow-up. Individuals with spacer exchange illustrated lower postoperative periprosthetic joint infection (PROM) scores and diminished improvement in multiple PROM scores after reimplantation, highlighting that an interim spacer exchange in two-stage revision is correlated with worse individual outcomes.
