Out of hospital cardiac arrest outcomes: Impact of weekdays vs weekends admission on survival to hospital discharge
Resuscitation Sep 28, 2019
El Asmar A, et al. - Researchers examined how weekend vs weekday admission influences outcomes of patients presenting with out of hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) in the United States. From the 2014 US National Emergency Department Sample database, the inclusion of 145,774 patients [Mean age: 65.9 years; male: 61.8%] with cardiac arrest was done. As an overall outcome, survival to hospital discharge was observed for only 5.7% patients. The analysis revealed a slightly lower survival of patients with OHCA admitted to the ED on weekends vs those admitted on weekdays. Modifiable factors should be identified in future studies to reduce outcome discrepancies and improve survival in this patient population.
