Otopathology of unilateral cochlear implantation in patients with bilateral temporal bone fracture
Otology & Neurotology Dec 18, 2018
Trakimas DR, et al. - Researchers sought to describe otopathologic findings of unilateral cochlear implantation in patients with temporal bone fracture (TBF) to provide insight into pathophysiology and outcomes. They reviewed the clinical histories and audiometric outcomes. Findings suggested rare otopathologic analyses of patients with a CI after bilateral TBF. Extensive intracochlear fibroosseous changes greater than the nonimplanted side were demonstrated by implanted TBs based on otopathology of two patients with bilateral TBF and subsequent CI. They noted the implications of findings for auditory rehabilitation after TBF. On the implanted side, interaural SGN counts were lower and hearing results were moderate to poor.
