Oropharyngeal hemorrhage in patients with COVID-19: A multi-institutional case series
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Sep 07, 2020
Mulcahy CF, Ghulam-Smith M, Mamidi IS, et al. - Researchers sought to report five cases of oropharyngeal hemorrhage in COVID-19 patients on mechanical ventilation necessitating otolaryngology intervention at George Washington University Hospital (GWUH) and Boston Medical Center (BMC) from March to April 2020. Conservative management was performed in all five patients; packing with Kerlix gauze was required in four cases. Observations suggest a possibility of raised risk of oropharyngeal hemorrhage in intubated patients with COVID-19. Anticoagulation, prolonged intubation, or reduced frequency of endotracheal tube repositioning may explain this risk. They recommend otolaryngologists to wear appropriate PPE while managing this hemorrhagic complication.
