Orofacial motor functions and temporomandibular disorders in patients with Sjögren's syndrome
Arthritis Care & Research Jun 21, 2019
Zanin MC, et al. - Patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) were compared with those without SS regarding orofacial muscles and functions as well as the presence of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). In addition, they analyzed the association of experiencing limitations in orofacial functioning with the orofacial functional status and muscle pain related to TMD. Observations revealed that based on lower scores of all categories of orofacial myofunctional evaluation, tongue strength, and masticatory muscle activity as well as worse TMD signs and symptoms and jaw functional limitation, Sjögren's Syndrome patients present with impaired muscle and orofacial functions. Orofacial myofunctional status and muscle pain related to TMD were noted in correlation to the patients’ experiences with limitation in mastication and swallowing. Researchers recommend monitoring those disorders along with disease control and addressing them in the clinical evaluation to prevent nutritional and metabolic comorbidities in SS patients.
