Orbital complications of rhinosinusitis in the adult population: Analysis of cases presenting to a tertiary medical center over a 13-year period
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology May 21, 2019
El Mograbi A, et al. - In this retrospective case series, researchers shared their experience with the management of orbital complications of rhinosinusitis in the adult patient population, as well as identified key factors in the features and management of these patients. Seventy patients with a median age at diagnosis of 38 years were identified. According to findings, chronic rhinosinusitis is very common in adults with orbital complications of rhinosinusitis as opposed to the pediatric population, with previous sinus surgery and dehiscence of the orbital wall being noticeably common. More severe complications were noted among older patients. In patients with preseptal and orbital cellulitis, undertaking conservative treatment was suggested. Surgical drainage is advocated with excellent outcomes in more advanced stages.
